Plant Up's Green Wall

Plant Up’s tallest external green wall in Brisbane will soon be internal also
By Geoff Wilson.

Jonathon Grealy is a green wall designer and horticulturalist who has just built Queensland’s tallest green wall  - in a most-pleasing office entrance greenery combination 10 metres high, using more than 60 plant species. He will soon show how this external creation can easily be moved inside the building as well. All that is required is good design and a knowledge of new technology now being well-used by Australian green wall innovators.

This most attractive green wall fits comfortably next to an unusual dining-meeting place opposite the main door of a working office.  The accompanying pictures show this, and how Jonathon has well-meshed full-sun plants with those only capable of growing well in shade. What Jonathon Grealy is now planning is an additional, complementary internal living plant design into the building’s foyer, so that the “good psychology” of urban greenery can be extended to well-benefit the 20 or more people who use the building as a week-day headquarters. The Kedron design was a challenge that is now a triumph. The initial 10 metre wall on the entrance of the building has an easterly aspect that forced selection of hot-dry plant species at the top and shade-tolerant plant species at the bottom. According to Jonathon: “The external green wall is Stage One of the overall design.  It will incorporate an additional 40 square metres of ‘Continuous Surface Greenwall’ in the foyer of the building.
“From its inception the building was designed with green walls in mind, “he said. “The external walls and the roof section of the foyer are constructed with ‘Makrolon’. “This is a light-weight sheeting that allows a large amount of natural light through, he said. “With use of ‘Makrolon sheeting there will be no additional requirement for lighting of the internal green wall.”
The Plant Up green wall also has three styles ofpanelling:

  • Continuous Surface Greenwall  Panel
  • Blade Panel
  • Sudo Baskets

The Blade Panel is a compact unit that creates a one metre wide column of vegetation. This is achieveable as it is planted out on three sides. Sudo Baskets feature largish plants and accent them on a wall. They can hold an individual plant with a 1.5 metre-wide growth habit. Jonathon said the Plant Up panels were 100% Australan-made and are constructed using 90% recycled materials. The ‘Greenwall’ design was created jointly by Jonathon Grealy of Plant Up Pty td and Mark Paul of the Greenwall Company. It has a very low water use.  Average daily consumption is less than two (2) litres a square metre a day! The green wall at Kedron is irrigated using rainwater collected from the building’s roof – with water storage tanks located under the front car park. Mark Paul said: “The planting of the wall is specifically designed so that the plants requiring higher light intensity are not over-shadowed by others. Plants with greatest water needs are planted at the lower levels”. More-than 60 plant species are used in the 10 metres x 3 metres office-entrance space at Kedron, including a mixture of Bromeliads, Cacti and Ferns.

Jonathon said: “The plant species selection is imperative for creating a truly sustainable ‘Greenwall’. “It is essential when designing a ‘Greenwall’ that the horticultural aspects are the main priority – which ensures that it is built to last.” He said the plants were grown and supplied by Bruce Dunstan and his team at Greenstock Nurseries. Eureka Landscapes’ Jason McGarry said:  “Plant Up provided exceptional delivery of the project, from design through to installation.  Jason also said he will be “excited to watch” the ‘Greenwall’ vision developing – as the panels mature over the next few years. Jonathon began his horticultural career 16 years ago with the Port Stephens Council, in New South Wales, just north of the City of  Newcastle. He completed a Parks and Gardens Apprentieship under the guidance of well-known horticulturalist, Brad Horan.  He was awarded ‘Apprentice of the Year for Newcastle and the Hunter  in 1998’. From there Jonathon developed his own landscape construction and maintenance company, Valley Horticultural Service.  It operated in Newcastle and up the famous Hunter Valley. Since then Jonathon has been involved in all aspects of the landscape industry –from maintaining public parklands through to project management of large-scale landscape infrastructue works valued at more than A$30 million. He said: “Green roofs and green walls are now coming into prominence in Australian urban design due to population growth and a new urban density.

“There is a definite demand in the current built-environment to incorporate more positive urban design and increased green space into smaller areas. “Plant Up Pty Ltd. was formed to deliver sustainable landscape installations that challenge pre-conceived design parameters. “In addition to the environmental benefits for buyers of our installations,  its fun to grow plants up a wall!”, he said.
